Victorialand…the happiest place on earth
My home, known as “Victorialand” to family and friends, is the place where we gather to chat about everything and nothing, cook and eat healthy food, and laugh out loud. It’s our “happy place.”
Victorialand is the place where I model a “be brave, be victorious” way of life for my children. This mindset was my source of strength during two life-changing experiences that took place within a few years of each other: the end of a marriage and the birth of my youngest son, who has an acute visual impairment.
My personal history of skin challenges including increased hyperpigmentation, oiliness, and premature aging was staring me right in the face. I tried dozens of products and consulted with several dermatologists to no avail, so I decided to take things into my own hands.
I hunkered down in my kitchen and spent months mixing and blending clean, naturally-derived, and certified organic ingredients. I was in search of formulas that would help solve not only my skincare problems, but those of thousands of others with similar frustrations. I shared the fruits of my labor with family and friends and we all agreed that I was onto something special. As one of my BFFs said, “Our skin looks and feels good enough to go naked.” That was the beginning of Victorialand Beauty (VLB) and the #GoNaked challenge.
In between mixing and blending formulas, I was mesmerized by watching my son Cyrus navigate his unsighted world through his keen sense of touch and sound. In awe of him and the amazing power of the mind-body connection, I was inspired to do something to change both my son’s life for the better as well as the lives of the nearly 300 million visually impaired people worldwide.
Heartened by the divine wonder of this eye-opening experience, The CyR.U.S. System of Raised Universal Symbols was created. This proprietary tactile recognition system is comprised of a universal set of raised symbols placed on each product’s primary package to facilitate identification. With a simple touch, VLBs’ skin-loving products are accessible to all!
Importantly, VLB commits 2% of sales to Boston Children’s Hospital's (BCH) pediatric ophthalmological department and their research efforts to advance new treatment and cures for visually impaired children.
BCH, ranked #1 pediatric hospital by U.S. News & World Report for 5 consecutive years, is where my son is treated with care, compassion and state-of-the-art medical treatments. Working tirelessly to discover new treatments and cures for visually impaired children, BCH represents hope…the hope that my son and children like him will be able to live their dreams. Until then, I live each day in a “be brave, be victorious” state of mind!

As you may know from reading my story, my home, Victorialand, is a fun, happy place. It’s a place that radiates joy, and most importantly, it’s where I’m a mom to four amazing children ranging from toddler to millennial.
Each of my children has their unique footprint in the world and in my heart. The joy and happiness that children bring to our homes and to the world at large is priceless. It’s something we should honor, celebrate and cherish. This sentiment, along with the birth of my youngest son Cyrus, who was born with an acute visual impairment, inspired VLB’s Giving Back program.
The World Health Organization estimates that there are almost 2 million children globally with visually impairments. These children need our help to ensure that they, too, can dream, dare, and deliver.
Victorialand Beauty proudly supports Boston Children’s Hospital’s (BCH)Linkwith a commitment of 2 % of all sales. VLB funds are designated to BCH’s Pediatric Ophthalmology Department, the largest in the country, to support their life-changing efforts to identify new diagnostic paradigms and treatment modalities for visually impaired children.

My 18-month old son, Cyrus, is a child affected by a chronic illness. Cyrus was born visually impaired due to a genetic disease known as familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR). FEVR is a hereditary disorder that affects the retina with symptoms that include vision loss or blindness, retinal detachment and strabismus. Cyrus is impacted by all of these impairments.
We recently traveled to BCH, a Harvard Medical School affiliate that is ranked # 1 pediatric hospital by US News & World Report, to meet with Dr. Yoshihiro Yonekawa, the Director of Pediatric Retina Surgery at BCH, and his team to learn more about the disease, its impact on Cyrus’ current vision, the recommended treatment and the “vision” for the future.
The visit was invaluable—the knowledge, resources and recommended treatment protocol received from this amazing team empowered us with the hope that our dream for Cyrus to live a happy, fulfilling life can be a reality with or without full vision. We will continue to make semi-annual visits to BCH to monitor Cyrus’ situation, discuss further state-of-the-art treatments for FEVR and get updates on the DreamDareDeliver Campaign.
With over 1.3 billion people affected by visual impairment, easily accessible product packaging is a must. Most brands, big and small, have not recognized this need. In fact, utilizing braille or any other form of raised symbols in the packaging and labelling industries are rare phenomenons.
